Up in the air

So, I may be losing a job. This would be one of the three that I paste together to make my living, and ironically it's the one I thought was the least insecure (College #1 -- been there 22 years). Not sure what to do about that. Okay, obviously, I have to get another job. But how?

I am sorry to see this; and although I don't know how, I wish you good luck with finding another one.

I just know something will turn up!

This is terrible news. I know nothing of the employment situation for philosophical musicians in your part of the USA, but I'm guessing it's not great. What would trouble me most is that I know there is rampant age-ism in the employment process these days. Youthful exuberance is favoured over wise experience. Of course, I have no real knowledge, and I'm sure lazygal has some insight that I don't have and indeed, something will turn up.

This was, indeed, my philosophical-musical job. I taught three philosophy courses and played piano for the chorus and at various events (look how quickly she lapses into past tense). But the Fall schedule was released yesterday, and my name was not on it. Most of the philosophy instruction was listed as TBA, with (I'm told) "hiring decisions" not to be made till May. No one will sit down and explain it to me, though the muttered words are "financial crisis" and "cutbacks everywhere." In the past, if your classes kept filling, you'd automatically get offered the same schedule from year to year; but now it looks like the college wants to make a clean sweep and start over, with obligations to no one. (Alternatively, they don't want *me* back, and the other adjuncts have all received private assurances of continued employment.)

After 22 years, it was a heckuva way to find out.

And, yeah, at age 55 and with my weird resume, I don't know what I'll do. I swear I'd marry for money, if anyone was asking. :-)
