Today's Friday Five wants to know if I've got game.

I guess it's my move!

1. When and how did you learn to play chess?
I'm pretty sure I learned from the rules printed inside the box lid of a cheap chess set bought for us when my siblings and I were kids.

2. How is your chess game?
I do not have a chess game. We did play as kids, my siblings & myself, and I still remember the rules; however, I have absorbed enough from cinematic (etc.) depictions of chess over the years to know that I don't have a clue as to how the game is really played. Might as well say that someone was a poker player just because he knew that four of a kind beats a flush.

(Four of a kind does beat a flush, doesn't it?)

I feel like adding, for whatever reason, that I actually know a chess genius.

3. When did you last find yourself in a stalemate?
Gosh, I think I'm in stalemate at two of my jobs. I can't agitate for better working conditions because it would give my superiors the excuse they've been looking for to let me go; meanwhile, it'll be hard for them to fire me as long as I'm willing to keep my head down and work under the current conditions. We seem to be stuck with each other and with things as they are.

4. A gambit is a chess opening in which a player sacrifices a piece in hopes of gaining an advantageous position. What was one of your recent, real-world gambits?
It's hard to pick just one, as it feels like my life is nothing but a succession of negotiations in which I accept some little humiliation in return for a smidgen of good will from my sons/students/boss/bandmates/ex-husband. Then again, maybe that's just the definition of "civilization" (except with a less extreme word than "humiliation"?), but I personally feel like I do so much conceding that sometimes I'm ready for a new metaphor.

5. Which piece on the chessboard is most like you, and why?
Duh, a pawn. And I'd like to shake the hand of anyone who answers honestly and says anything other than "pawn."

As for why, in my case it's about lack of agency. I just don't have that many possible moves.

I don't know what the above instructions are pointing to, but I suppose I'm about to find out.

Your writing is so good to read. It's not often that a blogger will commit to the use of the multi-layered beauty of our language.

Have a lovely weekend.
